The JAS Motorsport Honda Civic Type R R3 made a successful World Rally Championship debut on the Catalunya Rally, with Dani Sola winning the R3 category and finishing fourth in the Junior Championship class (although he is not registered for the series). This excellent result, which equates to 20th overall, saw Honda defeat its key R3 rival on the Civic's very first outing in the World Championship, with no mechanical problems at all throughout the three-day event to the south of Barcelona.
The Catalunya Rally is the quickest asphalt event on the World Rally Championship, and this year competitors had to deal with changing weather conditions after rain fell on Friday afternoon. Before the start, the new car was launched to the international media, with several leading teams and drivers also attending the presentation. The new Honda Civic Type R R3 will be eligible to enter the Junior Championship next year, as well as the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and a variety of other national and international championships.
Car n.63 Dani Sola (E) - Carlos del Barrio (E)
Dani and Carlos enjoyed an excellent run during their home event, experiencing no problems at all throughout the rally. The only disadvantage they faced was on Friday afternoon, when they had to drive through rain that some of their competitors did not experience. Thanks to a sensible tyre choice and some very quick stage times on Saturday they were able to recoup the ground that had been lost. On Sunday they drove sensibly in order to consolidate their position on this tricky event, taking care to eliminate unnecessary risks. In order to be sure of having a valid comparison, the JAS Motorsport Honda team adopted exactly the same regulations used on the Junior World Rally Championship.
Quotes
Dani Sola: "I loved competing in front of my home crowd, which gave me so much support. The rally was like a dream: nothing went wrong and we were able to set some very good stage times. The quick stages were generally well-suited to the car's engine, which is very impressive. This result is an excellent reward for all the hard work the entire team has completed so far and it proves how competitive our Honda Civic Type R R3 is in the closely-fought Junior Championship."
Alessandro Mariani, team principal: "We're very happy with this result on only our first WRC outing, which underlines that we have had a very good basis to work from. Of course development is an ongoing process, as our objective is to provide the best possible package to our customers. We will continue to work hard for even better results into the future."
